- 1 yarn needle
- Scissors
For the lining:
- 35 × 25cm (14 × 10in) fabric
- Blue thread
- 18cm (7in) long colourful zip
- Needle
- Pins
- Sewing machine
How to make striped cosmetic bag?
Step 1: The bag is knitted completely in garter stitch (see here). Loosely cast on 27 stitches in blue.
Step 2: Work the 1st row in blue, then 2 rows in white (with yarn doubled), then 2 rows in blue.
Step 3: Continue in these alternating colours. Finish when the piece measures about 25cm (10in) ending on a blue row, and cast off loosely on the reverse side. The knitted piece should measure about 26 × 20cm (10 × 8in).
Step 4: Fold the knitted piece in half with the wrong side facing outwards. Sew up the side seams and sew in all the loose ends.
Step 5: Turn the bag the right way out. The pouch should now measure about 20 × 13cm (8 × 5in).
Step 6: Finally, prepare and insert the bag lining and zip. (See below)

Two-tone bag
Whether for cosmetics, pens, or loose change, this pretty woollen bag is a must.
You will need:
For the knitted bag:
- 50cm (20in) 7mm (UK size 2) circular needle
- About 30g (1oz) white wool, here: Lamana Cusco (100% alpaca), knitted with the wool held double
- About 60g (2oz) anthracite colour wool, here: Lamana Nazca (40% alpaca, 40% merino, 20% nylon)
- 1 yarn needle
- Scissors
For the lining:
- Paper pattern (see below)
- 35 × 35cm (14 × 14in) fabric
- 18cm (7in) long colourful zip
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Needle
- White thread
How to make Two Tone Bag?
Step 1: Loosely cast on 27 stitches in white (with the yarn held double).
Step 2: Knit 6 rows in moss stitch (see over here).
Step 3: On the 7th row, knit 2, then, from the doubled yarn, knit 1 stitch from the first strand and another stitch from the second strand (so 2 knit stitches are created from a single stitch), then continue with knit 1, knit 2 stitches from 1, knit 1, knit 2 stitches from 1, to the end of the row, finishing with an edge stitch. (39 stitches)
Step 4: Switch to anthracite: knit 1 stitch, purl to the last stitch, then knit the last stitch. Continue in stocking stitch.
Step 5: When the piece measures about 21cm (8½in), switch to white on a right side row: knit 1, *1 knit stitch, knit 2 together, repeat from * to the last 2 stitches, then knit 2. (27 stitches)
Sep 6: Then work a further 6 rows in moss stitch and cast off loosely on row 7.
Step 7: Measure your knitted piece. The white upper and lower edges should be about 21cm (8½in) wide, the middle section in anthracite about 29cm (11½in) wide. Thanks to the increases and decreases at the colour transition, the knitted piece is convex in shape. You will need to take this into account when cutting the lining fabric to size.
Step 8: Fold the knitting in half with the wrong side facing out. Sew up the side seams and sew in all the loose ends.
Step 9: Turn the bag right way out. The pouch should now be about 29cm (11½in) wide at the bottom, 21cm (8½in) wide at the top and about 14cm (5½in) tall. To prepare and insert the lining fabric, see opposite.
Lining bag and finishing
How it’s done?
The same approach is used for both designs.
Step 1: For the striped bag, cut the fabric
according to the dimensions of the
knitted pouch, adding 1cm (½in) seam allowance at the sides. For the two-tone bag, use the template (see this template), and this time add a 2cm (¾in) seam allowance.
Step 2: Pin the zip on to the right side of the material along the short edge (the zip pull should be on top) and sew the upper zip tape in place with a sewing machine. Pin and sew the other edge in a similar manner.
Step 3: Now sew up the side seams (using the seam allowance of 1cm / ½in), from the bottom up to the zip seam.
Step 4: Place the lining bag inside the knitted bag. Pin the upper edges together, taking care that the side seams are aligned.
Step 5: Hand-sew the knitted bag to the zip fastener, using the needle and thread and making small adjustments as you go to avoid bunching.
Cosmetic bags are a wonderful gift idea for the Christmas festival. They not only serve a practical purpose by providing a dedicated space to store and organize cosmetics, but they can also be customized and personalized to add a touch of thoughtfulness to the present. Making cosmetic bags for Christmas can be a fun and creative project that allows you to customize the gift according to the recipient’s taste and preferences.
To make cosmetic bags for Christmas, you will need a few materials and tools. These include fabric (preferably cotton or canvas), a sewing machine, thread, a zipper, a ruler, scissors, pins, and optional embellishments such as ribbons, buttons, or beads. You can also consider using fabric markers or fabric paint to add decorative designs or personalized messages.
Another step-by-step guide on making cosmetic bags for Christmas:
- 1. Choose the fabric: Start by selecting a suitable fabric that matches the recipient’s style or preferred color scheme. You can opt for traditional Christmas-themed prints like snowflakes, reindeers, or Santa Claus, or you can choose something more elegant and neutral.
- 2. Measure and cut: Measure and cut two rectangular pieces of fabric for the bag’s main body. The size will depend on the desired final dimensions of the cosmetic bag. A typical size could be around 8 inches wide and 10 inches high. Additionally, cut a smaller rectangle for the bag’s lining, using the same measurements as the main body.
- 3. Prepare the zipper: Take the zipper and place it face down on one of the long edges of the main body fabric. Pin it in place and sew it using a zipper foot on your sewing machine. Repeat the same process with the other main body fabric piece and the other side of the zipper.
- 4. Sew the sides: With the zipper installed, place the main body fabric pieces facing each other with the right sides together. Pin the sides and bottom edges together, leaving the top open for turning. Sew along the sides and bottom, reinforcing the corners, and making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end for added durability.
- 5. Trim and finish: Trim the excess fabric from the corners and along the seams to reduce bulk. Turn the bag right side out through the open top, gently pushing out the corners. Press the bag with an iron to give it a polished finish.
- 6. Add the lining: Take the smaller fabric piece you cut for the lining and fold it in half with the right sides together. Sew along the sides, leaving a small opening for turning. Trim the corners and turn the lining right side out.
- 7. Insert the lining: Slip the lining inside the main body of the bag, aligning the top edges. Pin the edges together, making sure the zipper is positioned neatly between the fabric layers. Stitch around the top edge, securing the lining to the main body.
- 8. Embellish (optional): This is where you can personalize the cosmetic bag further. Add decorative elements like ribbons, buttons, or beads to the front, back, or zipper pull to give it that extra touch of uniqueness.
- 9. Final touches: If desired, use fabric markers or paint to create any designs, patterns, or personalized messages on the exterior of the bag. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before using or gifting the cosmetic bag.
By following these steps, you can create beautiful and personalized cosmetic bags that will make excellent Christmas gifts. Remember to have fun and let your creativity flow.

There are several techniques and tips you can use to embellish cosmetic bags for the Christmas festival. Here are a few ideas:
- 1. Glitter: Adding glitter is a great way to make a cosmetic bag look festive. You can use glue and loose glitter to create patterns or designs on the bag. Make sure to use a clear drying glue made for fabric or a fabric glue pen to avoid any damage.

- 4. Appliqué: Another option is to create holiday-themed appliqués from fabric scraps. You can cut out shapes like Christmas stockings, ornaments, or snowflakes from colorful fabrics and sew or glue them onto the cosmetic bag.

- 7. Add a Tag or Charm: Attach a festive holiday tag or charm to the zipper or handle of the cosmetic bag. You can find holiday-themed charms or make your own by tying a small piece of ribbon or string through a decorative ornament or mini Christmas decoration.
Remember, safety is important when embellishing cosmetic bags. Ensure that the materials you use are non-toxic, and test any products or techniques on a small, inconspicuous area of the bag before proceeding with the full design.
