It is generally believed that Nature is ruthless. If any wild creature is sick or injured it is always left to die or is actually killed by its companions rather than become a liability to them. Plants are the source of all life. They are the only things capable of catching the energy of the sun and turning it into living tissue. Without plants there would be no animals and no people. Although many animals are potentially dangerous to Man, most have been greatly exaggerated as killers by sensational fiction. Tales of man-eating tigers, voracious sharks and blood thirsty wolves abound, but most are pure invention. It is perhaps fitting that one nation, Canada, should have recognized the elegance, industry and charm of the beaver by selecting it as its national animal. Regrettably, this acknowledgement is quite recent since historical records clearly state that beavers were once more numerous and widespread than they are today.
